The World Cannabis Day event is taking place today in Bangkok, and the organisers plan to hold a cannabis smoking “parade” along Khao San Road at 4.20pm. However, Thailand’s Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has warned the organisers not to consume cannabis in public or face legal action. He emphasized that cannabis and hemp should only be used for medical purposes, and consumption in public places is against the law. The minister also urged the organisers to comply strictly with the Public Health Ministry’s regulations on cannabis, and not to consume cannabis during the parade, as this may lead to fines or imprisonment. He added that smoking cannabis during the parade could also support those who oppose the liberalization of cannabis for medical purposes. The liberalization of cannabis is the key policy of Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party. The deputy director-general of the Health Department, Dr. Attapol Kaewsamrit, advised the organisers to exercise caution during the parade, as authorities will be closely monitoring the event to ensure that the law is strictly enforced. According to Time magazine, “Weed Day” or 420 (four-twenty) originated in 1971 when a group of students in California began meeting at 4.20 pm to smoke marijuana.
